Friendships That Honor God

Verse: "Iron sharpeneth iron; so, a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”— Proverbs 27:17 (KJV)

Friendship is one of God’s most powerful tools for growth—yet it’s also one of the most underestimated. We often choose friends based on comfort, history, or convenience, but Scripture points us toward something deeper. God-honoring friendships are not just supportive; they are refining.

Proverbs 27:17 reminds us that true friendship sharpens. That process isn’t always easy. Iron sharpening iron creates friction, not flattery. A friend who honors God will encourage you, yes—but they will also challenge you when your attitudes, choices, or priorities drift away from what God desires.

Godly friendships point us back to truth when emotions run high. They pray with us instead of only sympathizing. They celebrate growth, not just success. Most importantly, they help us walk closer to God, not further from Him.

Not every relationship is meant to sharpen you. Some friendships keep us comfortable but stagnant. Others quietly pull us away from prayer, obedience, and accountability. This doesn’t mean we discard people carelessly, but it does mean we discern wisely. The people closest to us influence how we think, how we speak, and how we live out our faith.

Friendship that honors God creates space for honesty without judgment and correction without condemnation. These relationships remind us that we are not meant to walk this faith journey alone—but we are meant to walk it wisely.

As we grow spiritually, our friendships may change. That’s not loss; it’s alignment. When our relationships honor God, they strengthen our faith, sharpen our character, and reflect His love in tangible ways.

Prayer

Lord, Thank You for the gift of friendship. I ask for wisdom to build and maintain relationships that honor You. Help me to be a friend who encourages, sharpens, and points others toward You. Remove relationships that distract me from Your will, and strengthen those that help me grow in faith, truth, and love. Teach me discernment, humility, and grace in all my connections. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
