You Gotta Start Romanticizing Your Life.

Writer: Liz EllicksonLiz Ellickson

A simple little thing called romanticizing your life. It’s making the most mundane and simple tasks exciting and new. Whether it’s the hustle and bustle of getting the kids off to school, the never ending loads of laundry, or your morning commute. It’s believing that morning commute is fun and exciting by listening to your favorite podcast or adding a new air freshener to your rear view mirror. It’s believing that cup of coffee is the best cup of coffee you have ever had and drinking it from your favorite mug.

It’s using your favorite scented laundry detergent for that dreaded load of baseball uniforms. It’s finding joy in the little things that helps us have gratitude for the big things.

I have had many conversations about this concept with a few people in my life. In fact, my mother-in-law is a professional at romanticizing her life and she doesn’t even realize it! The other day, she was so excited to tell me about a new recipe that she could not wait to try out.

Intrigued, as I enjoy cooking too, she goes on to tell me about this recipe for boiled peanuts that are known to be delicious. Boiled peanuts?! I never heard of it! Shocked, I ask how to make these special peanuts. She goes on to tell me that she would be taking a special trip to the grocery store to find raw peanuts for her recipe. She texted me a few hours later telling me the peanuts take 6-8 hours to make, but she was determined! 6-8 hours, I thought, who has time for that? That is when I crowned my mother-in-law the queen of romanticizing life. She always finds joy and excitement in the smallest things and shares that joy with others.

It truly is about simplifying our lives and taking every simple moment and making it the best moment. So much of our lives are consumed with an on the go lifestyle and instant gratification from technology, that taking time to really slow down and focus on the simple things is when we can truly find gratitude to make the best out of life. Once we have that, we can spread joy onto others. Of course in the end, the special boiled peanuts were delicious and totally worth the 6-8 hours! You gotta start romanticizing your life.
