Respect, Kindness, and a Godly Attitude

Anchor Verse: "Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, longsuffering.”— Colossians 3:12 (KJV)
A godly attitude is not about personality or politeness—it is about obedience. Colossians 3:12 calls believers to put on certain qualities, like clothing chosen intentionally each day. Respect, kindness, and humility are not automatic responses; they are spiritual disciplines.
Kindness becomes difficult when we feel disrespected. Respect feels unnecessary when we believe someone doesn’t deserve it. Yet Scripture never ties godly character to how others behave. Instead, it ties our attitude to who we belong to. As God’s chosen and beloved, we are called to respond differently—not because people are always kind, but because God is always faithful.
Respect honors the image of God in others, even when agreement is absent. Kindness reflects God’s mercy, especially in tense or uncomfortable moments. A godly attitude keeps our hearts guarded when emotions rise and patience wears thin.
The world often encourages reaction—quick words, sharp tones, and self-defense. God calls us to something higher: humility of mind and longsuffering. This does not mean silence in the face of injustice or passivity in conflict. It means responding with self-control, wisdom, and grace rooted in Christ.
Every day presents opportunities to either reflect God’s character or react from our flesh. When we choose respect and kindness, we testify to the work God is doing within us. A godly attitude is not weakness—it is strength under submission to God.
As believers, our attitude becomes part of our witness. What we wear spiritually speaks before we ever say a word.
Prayer
Lord, Help me to put on compassion, kindness, humility, and patience each day. When my emotions are tested, remind me who I belong to and how You have treated me with mercy and grace. Shape my attitude so that it reflects Your heart, even in difficult moments. Teach me to respond with respect and love, not impulse or pride. May my life honor You in both word and spirit. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
