About once a year, my girlfriends and I plan a quick weekend getaway. This year we chose to travel to Galena, IL about a three hour drive from the Joliet area. We stayed at the Irish Cottages in the downtown area, just off of Maine St. We booked a two bedroom suite that Included two queen beds and one king bed, perfect for the five of us! Pricing came out to about $135 a person for two nights with AAA discount. (Highly recommend taking advantage of discounts!)
The Irish Cottages provide an Irish theme throughout the hotel and included a restaurant/bar, complimentary buffet breakfast, pool, gym and spa amenities. we chose to indulge in the spa services during our stay and it was amazing! The hotel also offers live music on Saturday evenings In the restaurant/bar.
Throughout our stay, we spent a lot of our time on Maine St. where you can find endless shopping, restaurants, wine tasting rooms and live music! The old historic buildings turned into restaurants and shops were really a sight to see. Some of these historic buildings are known to be haunted and many of the locals can even provide information on the history of these buildings. For even more details on this quaint town, Galena trolley tours are also offered on Main St.
since most of our group are foodies, we chose two of the best restaurants to try based on reviews and recommendations: Fried Green Tomatoes and the Log Cabin Steakhouse. Both of these restaurants were phenomenal and had great menu options and prices!
We also enjoyed the wine tasting rooms, coffee shops and breakfast at Otto’s Place just off of Maine St. We loved the coffee at Galena Roasters where they roast their own coffee and source their coffee beans from Central and South America, Africa and Indonesia. (We love our coffee!)
Travel is good for the soul. Traveling helps us get out of our comfort zone and promote personal growth whether it’s a day trip or longer! We can always learn something new about ourselves when we travel, by creating new memories and life experiences. Whether it be a family trip, solo trip, or girlfriend‘s getaway, traveling is great for recharging our batteries. Travel doesn’t need to be expensive. Finding your budget and sticking to it can be so helpful when planning your next trip.
Life is for living and enjoying new experiences. Whether you prefer to travel with loved ones or solo, both are empowering and so special!
Between the fives of us, we are all at different stages of life; between raising a family, starting a family, or focusing on our careers, we all have come together to recharge our batteries for the weekend and it was a great time!
